Campbell worthy of call-up IF SUNDERLAND forward Fraizer Campbell can continue his stunning pre-season goalscoring form then he should be considered for a call-up to the senior England squad.

That is the view of Steve Bruce who is ready to partner the former England Under-21 international with Darren Bent this season after labelling the youngster’s impact in recent weeks as “sensational”.

Bruce has handed Campbell, who featured mainly on the right side of midfield last year, a chance during pre-season to showcase his ability as a striker, and the 22-year-old has not disappointed.

While Bent has struggled to regain his lethal touch in front of goal and Kenwyne Jones has grown increasingly accustomed to being named among the substitutes, Campbell has scored six times in pre-season. After using him sparingly last term Bruce believes that the time has come for Campbell to be unleashed on the England stage.

The England manager will name his squad this weekend for next Wednesday’s friendly against Hungary and there is growing pressure on Capello to use the game as an opportunity to blood emerging talent.

Bruce has added Campbell’s name to the likes of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, Aston Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso and Manchester City centre-half Micah Richards as players who are worthy of consideration.

Speaking after seeing Campbell’s opening strike help Sunderland secure a 2-1 victory at Leicester City last Saturday, Bruce said: “Fraizer has been sensational in pre-season.

“He scored four against Hull and today he got his sixth. He has come back from the break and looks a million dollars. We are delighted.

“There is a long season ahead but long may it continue.

England, why not? Why not go with up-and-coming young talent.

“We knew when we bought him he was still a bit a raw, but he is quick, strong, powerful and looks a very good player already to me and the England manager should have a look at him.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Marton Fulop is scheduled to undergo a medical today ahead of a move to join former Black Cats boss Roy Keane at Ipswich Town.

Despite being rocked by injuries to Craig Gordon and reserve team keeper Trevor Carson, Bruce has not stood in the way of theHungary international.

The 27-year-old has been determined to establish himself as a number one after seeing his chances blocked at the Stadium of Light by Gordon’s impressive performances last season. If there are no unforeseen complications then Fulop will make his Tractor Boys’ debut in Saturday’s Championship encounter at Middlesbrough.

Belgium Under-21 Simon Mignolet pulled off some excellent saves at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday but Bruce is reluctant to expose him to Premier League football.

The manager is scouring the market for an experienced figure on loan while Gordon recovers from a broken arm.

Bruce has revealed that Gordon will have to wear a metal plate in his arm for the remainder of his career after twice breaking his left wrist bone.

Sunderland are monitoring Joe Hart’s position after the Manchester City keeper declared that would prefer to go out on loan rather than serve as Shay Given’s understudy.
