IPSWICH TOWN and Leeds United are monitoring the takeover situation at Sunderland before launching a bid to take Tommy Miller away from the Stadium of Light.

Dependening who has overall control at Sunderland, the valuation of Miller is likely to vary and the current board are not in a position to sell while talks with Niall Quinn's consortium are ongoing.

An outcome could come today, as a further meeting is planned between Bob Murray and Niall Quinn.

However, as seems likely, when Quinn's team seizes control then the midfielder's former club Ipswich and Leeds will attempt to prise him away from Wearside.

Miller was only signed from Ipswich 12 months ago, when Mick McCarthy persuaded him to make a move to his native North-East on a free transfer.

That decision came at the expense of both Ipswich and Leeds, who had also held talks with his representatives about the possibility of moving to Elland Road.

And now, a year on, Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell is mulling over the idea of launching a second bid for a player who forged a reputation as being one of the best goalscoring midfielders outside the Premiership during four years with Ipswich.

Earlier this summer it emerged Joe Royle had explored the possibility of taking him back to Portman Road, but the manager's removal killed off the Tractor Boys' interest.

But the appointment of Ipswich midfielder Jim Magilton as manager has meant Miller's former club's admiration has resurfaced.

Magilton remains a friend of Miller's from their time together in East Anglia and, provided he can raise the cash to fund a deal, the Northern Irishman will try to tempt Sunderland into selling.

The former Hartlepool United midfielder is due to return to pre-season training along with the rest of the squad on Monday, by which time there is likely to be no permanent manager in place.

Southampton are also known to be considering the 27-year-old scored three times in 27 Premiership starts for Sunderland.

* Middlesbrough striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is keen on a move to Celtic, according to his agent.

The 34-year-old has attracted the attention of the Bank of Scotland Premier League champions as well as three Barclays Premiership clubs.

Agent Humphry Nijmen said : ''I spoke to Jimmy about the possibility when I first heard of it and he would be very interested.

''He said they are a great club and would be charmed to play for them. It is now up to Celtic but we are willing to listen.

''At 34, he still has plenty to offer and still has ambitions at the highest level.

''It would not be a gamble for Celtic because he is already preparing his body for next season. He is a very dedicated and very fit professional.''

Gareth Southgate's first home game in charge of Boro has been thrown into confusion after Olympiacos admitted they have double-booked.

Boro were due to play the Greek champions in the only game of their pre-season campaign at the Riverside on Saturday, August 12.

However, the Teessiders are now looking for alternative opponents after it was revealed that Olympiacos have already agreed to play at West Ham on the same day.
