STEWART Downing is on the verge of joining Aston Villa after Middlesbrough accepted a £12m offer for the England international.
Downing, who is currently recuperating after a foot operation in the summer, is expected to travel to the Midlands to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical in the next 24 hours.
Tottenham Hotspur could opt to make a bid of their own in a final attempt to lure the winger to White Hart Lane, having failed in a number of previous attempts to sign him during the last 18 months.
However, Downing is known to be keen on a move to Villa Park and it is expected that a deal will be concluded before the weekend.
