LETS Roll can drag Chris Thornton out of the doldrums with a victory in the Mary Elizabeth Westwood Celebration Handicap at Beverley.

To be fair to the Middleham handler, his string is now down to single figures but Lets Roll has done his bit to keep him interested down the years, winning over £100,000 in prize money, and he hinted at a return to winning form last time out.

While the stayer may not be the force of old – he was was rated as high as 93 in his peak – there are still races to be won with him, albeit at a lower level.

There had not been much to get excited about in his first few runs of the season but running on the Westwood earlier this month he was noted staying on for second behind easy winner Spiders Star.

That was off a mark of 78 and he has been dropped another 3lb for this engagement. Crucially, there has been a bit of rain around as he does like a bit of dig in the ground.

Another key factor is that Paul Pickard has been chosen to do the steering and the valuable 7lb he can claim really adds to his chance.

Just 30 minutes later Pickard looks to have another good opportunity on Paul Midgley’s Exit Smiling in the Levy Board Handicap.

While the seven-year-old has never actually won at the track he has nevertheless run some cracking races on a few different occasions.

The handicapper does appear to have him slightly in his grasp but whenever he drops below a mark of 80 he is never far away.

He was rated 93 not so long back but down to 79 for this, less Pickard’s claim, he must be on the premises.

Mark Johnston continues to bang in the winners and his Lowdown looks the one to be on in the EBF toteplacepot Maiden Stakes at Yarmouth.

Fifth in a hot-looking maiden won by The Human League on his debut, Johnston’s newcomers invariably improve a good deal for their initial experience. Second in that Newcastle maiden was Godolphin’s Chaperno and he absolutely bolted up at York on Saturday so the form looks solid.

Lowdown had a host of entries this week so it looks significant Johnston has decided to send the Shamardal colt on the long journey from his Middleham base.
