STEVE BRUCE expects a couple of new faces to be part of the Sunderland squad that plays in the Amsterdam Tournament next month.

Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch, England Uunder-21 star Frazier Campbell and former Newcastle frontman Lomana LuaLua are the latest names to be added to a list of over a dozen players believed to be on Bruce’s ever expanding radar.

The Black Cats manager has yet to make significant progress in the transfer market despite being linked with the likes of Richard Dunne, Sylvain Distin, Lee Cattermole and Darren Bent.

He is, however, aiming to make a breakthrough before his side face Benfica at the Amsterdam Arena on July 24.

“I’m on the phone all of the time and am in constant touch with (chief executive) Steve Walton,”

said Bruce. “Hopefully we will have some new faces around at the start, and that would be terrific. I would hope to have some new faces in by the time of the opening friendly, or at least by the time we go to the Amsterdam Tournament.”

Crouch has become unsettled at Portsmouth after a lack of progress to resolve the south coast club’s ownership. But Bruce would face competition from Manchester City and Tottenham for the England striker.

LuaLua is looking for a move back to England after playing last season in Qatar following a spell with Greek side Olympiacos. But he and Manchester United marksman Campbell will only be considered if other targets fail to materialse.

The Sunderland players are due to return for pre-season training on July 8, and after playing Darlington at the Northern Echo Darlington Arena, will head for a pre-season training camp on the Algarve, where they will face Liga Vitalis outfit Portimonense.
