DURHAM City kept their unbeaten league record intact with victory at Warrington – but it came at a price.

City are unbeaten in 11 UniBond League games, but they lost striker Gavin Cogdon to injury late in the game.

Manager Lee Collings said: “He was caught by an horrendous challenge from behind that damaged Gavin’s knee ligaments. The ref said that he wasn’t going to book their lad, because it was his first challenge – to me it doesn’t matter whether it was his first challenge or not, their player should have been booked.

“But despite the injury, it was another good performance. We played well in the first half, and scrapped it out in the second half.”

City took the lead when Cogdon burst through after 24 minutes and beat the Warrington keeper for his 16th goal of the season, before the home side levelled from the penalty spot six minutes later.

But City took a grip on the game three minutes into the second half, when Ian Dixon crossed for Adam Johnston to head home – his 15th of the campaign.

Also in the First Division North, Newcastle Blue Star were within seconds of victory at Halifax Town, but were denied by a last minute goal and had to settle for a 3- 3 draw.

The Star were twice behind, but goals by Keith Graydon – who has moved to the club from Jarrow Roofing – and two from Karl Ross put them into the lead in front of a four figure crowd.

In the premier division, Whitby lost 2-0 at Boston United.

In the skilltrainingltd Northern League, Horden staged a remarkable comeback in stoppage time to earn three valuable promotion points against Guisborough.

Horden were the only one of the promotion contenders to pick up three points at the weekend, and manager Simon Corbett said: “Last week, when we scored within ten seconds, we told people to make sure they turned up for the start of the match.

This week, we’ve told them to make sure they don’t go early!”

Guisborough were twice in the lead in the game. David Onions ran through to put them ahead midway through the first half, and after Horden’s Ian Clark hit the post with a penalty, Craig Hubbard levelled on 68 minutes after sub Jonathan Monaghan’s shot was blocked.

Liam McPhillips restored Guisborough’s lead from a Luke Bythway pass, but in the first minute of stoppage time, Monaghan equalised with an overhead kick.

Within seconds, Hubbard cracked in the winner for a 3- 2 win.

Marske United were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Crook Town. Jon Newton gave Marske a half time lead when he cut in from the left and curled the ball around the keeper, but Crook deservedly levelled from a Darren Kokes penalty.

Whickham won 1-0 at Team Northumbria – Keith Main scoring their goal.

Washington emergency keeper Gary McCartney, who usually plays as a striker, had a blinder for his side in their derby at Hebburn, pulling off several outstanding saves. Hebburn took the lead with a Karl McMann shot after 15 minutes from a Micky Armstrong assist, and Washington levelled with a 30 yarder by Paul Terrell.

All first division games were postponed because of frozen pitches as were games at Birtley, North Shields and Sunderland RCA in the second division for the same reason. The games at Stokesley and Thornaby started but were abandoned because of fog.
