SUNDERLAND have held ‘productive’ talks with German club Borussia Monchengladbach over goalkeeper Jonas Omlin.
The Black Cats are keen to sign a new number two goalkeeper this month, casting major doubt over the future of Anthony Patterson, who has not played a single minute of Premier League football this season.
They have made their move for Omlin, a 32-year-old Switzerland international who has entered the final 18 months of his contract with Monchengladbach.
Omlin, who has previously played in the Swiss and French top-flights for Basel and Montpellier, joined Monchengladbach in January 2023.
He has made 36 senior appearances for the Bundesliga club, but has not featured in their first team at all this season, with his most recent outing having come in last May’s defeat to Wolfsburg.
Monchengladbach officials are willing to allow the shot-stopper to leave ahead of the February 2 transfer deadline if an acceptable deal can be agreed, and Sunderland’s recruitment have held an initial round of discussions.
Further talks are planned, with the Black Cats hierarchy hopeful of getting the green light to agree personal terms with Omlin and his representatives and schedule a medical.
Omlin almost joined Leicester City on loan in the summer, only for the Foxes to be unable to agree the terms of a deal with Monchengladbach. Leicester officials wanted a straight loan deal, whereas Monchengladbach were reported to be pushing for an agreement that contained a clause committing the Championship club to a potential permanent deal at the end of the season.
Omlin’s arrival on Wearside would pave the way for Patterson to leave during the current window, with last season’s promotion winner having been unable to dislodge Robin Roefs from his position as Sunderland’s number one.
A number of Championship clubs are known to have been monitoring Patterson’s situation, and the Black Cats are likely to receive offers for both loan moves and permanent deals if a willingness to part company with the academy product is confirmed.
