RYAN Giles is again on Middlesbrough's transfer radar but only preliminary talks have taken place with Hull City and there are obstacles to overcome before a potential deal is struck this month.
Hull are understood to be keen to offload Giles, who has struggled for form since joining the Tigers on an initial loan deal that was made permanent for £4m in the summer.
Boro boss Michael Carrick remains an admirer of Giles, who was believed to be desperate to re-sign for Boro in the summer having regretted not joining the club on a permanent deal in the summer of 2023. He instead signed for Luton Town but failed to establish himself with the Hatters.
If Hull are to offload Giles this month, they'll have to be realistic with their asking price and demands. There's no chance they'll recoup the fee they spent on Giles when they signed him on loan with an agreement to make the deal permanent last summer.
And at this stage it's not thought Boro would have competition for the capture of the left-back, so the Tigers wouldn't be able to play interested clubs off each other.
Informal discussions between the clubs have taken place, but any official Boro move will also depend on outgoings to create further space in the squad.

Giles was heavily linked with a return to the Riverside in the summer but a deal couldn't be agreed and Boro turned their attention elsewhere, signing Neto Borges.
Looking back on the summer of uncertainty and speculation, Giles said at the end of last year: "Listen, there were conversations, of course there were. I'm not going to shy away from it and lie about it, but I obviously only joined the club as a permanent in the summer, I know I was here in January but that was obviously as a loan.
"I had the conversations, it wasn't the case of me saying 'I want to leave', it wasn't that, we had a conversation and that was that. The club made it clear they wanted me to stay and I respected that."
Hull have endured a miserable season so far and Giles has only started 11 of their 26 Championship games.
He made a mistake that led to the Tigers conceding a goal against Doncaster Rovers in the FA Cup third round tie at the weekend. He was later replaced by Lewie Coyle, a change Hull boss Ruben Selles said was "tactical".
Despite his struggles in the last season and a half, Carrick believes he can again get the best out of Giles, who was an integral figure in the 2022/23 campaign when Boro reached the play-off semi-finals.
