EDDIE HOWE admitted that a calf injury to Kieran Trippier was the one downside of Newcastle United’s otherwise welcome win over Wolves.

The Magpies claimed their first victory at St James’ Park since mid-December as goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento secured a 3-0 victory,

Livramento came onto the field in the early stages of the second half as a replacement for Trippier, who was forced to hobble off after feeling something in his calf. The England international will now be scanned to ascertain the extent of the damage.

“Kieran felt something in his calf and had to come off the pitch,” said Howe, who was claiming his 100th Premier League victory as a manager. “That is a concern for us, although I don’t know how serious it is at this moment.”

Newcastle’s win lifted them back up to eighth position, and followed Tuesday night’s win at Blackburn, which secured a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Having experienced a difficult night at Arsenal last weekend, Howe has been delighted with the way in which his players have responded to events at the Emirates in the last seven days.

“I said to the players afterwards that Arsenal was only seven days ago, and that was a difficult day for everybody,” said the Newcastle boss. “Since then, we’ve progressed in the FA Cup and won in the league, and the world does look different.

“That shows how quickly football can turn, as long as the players are giving everything for you in training and on a matchday. Against Arsenal, we weren’t at our best. We tried to dust ourselves down and regroup and refocus on our key qualities. I’m delighted with the response.”
