EDDIE Howe is fuelled by the drive to right the wrongs of recent cup frustration as Newcastle United dream of a second Wembley appearance in as many seasons.

The Magpies are just one game away from Wembley after booking their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals thanks to a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Blackburn on Tuesday night.

With Newcastle struggling for form in the league, the FA Cup represents the only realistic chance of success this season and Howe says his players are "desperate" to go as far as possible in the competition.

From day one on Tyneside, Howe has made clear his determination to end the club's long wait for silverware. Newcastle came close last season when they made it to the League Cup final, only to lose to Manchester United - an experience that served to further strengthen Howe's trophy desire.

Howe felt a frustrating sense of what could have been at the weekend when he watched Liverpool and Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final - with Newcastle having come within seconds of knocking Mauricio Pochettino's side out at the quarter-final stage, only to concede a last gasp leveller and lose on penalties.

United's head coach is desperate to ensure the Magpies don't let any opportunity slip in the FA Cup.

"Watching the Carabao Cup final was bittersweet for me because I was looking at the game feeling we should have possibly been there after what happened at the end of the Chelsea game," he said.

"And then thinking back to the year before, so there are a lot of experiences we want to go through again.

"We're still in a competition we're desperate to do well in and with the carrot of Wembley, that would be a brilliant thing for us. The players understand the importance of this (competition), they're desperate to achieve."

Tuesday's cup win felt even more important on the back of the desperately disappointing showing at Arsenal at the weekend.

Howe said: "We spoke honestly after Arsenal. I did feel there was a bit of a hangover, a little dent in our confidence, but hopefully that will have disappeared now.

"I thought in general our attitude was much better (at Blackburn). We were fighting, giving everything, we weren't perfect but our spirit was there. And our spirit has been there since I've been here except two games. It has to be there in every game.

"There was a lot of mixed feelings after Arsenal that I felt I needed to get across to the players in no uncertain terms that we have to do a better job of representing ourselves than we did in that game.

"Our identity wasn't clear in the Arsenal match but I thought (at Blackburn), we weren't fantastic in our performance, but the spirit, determination and fight was there."

Howe confirmed Sven Botman was just rested at Ewood Park and the defender will be available to return for Saturday's home game against Wolves.
