MICHAEL CARRICK has not been surprised by Finn Azaz's goalscoring exploits - and is confident the January signing will continue to find the net in the remaining three months of the season.

Azaz made it two goals in two games as he netted in Middlesbrough’s excellent win at Championship leaders Leicester City.

Azaz opened the scoring for Boro with a clever finish before Sammy Silvera doubled the away side’s lead as Jamie Vardy bagged a late goal for the Foxes in vain.

And after Azaz also found the net in the midweek defeat to Preston, Carrick believes there is more to come from the attacking midfieler as Boro attempt to make a late charge for the play-offs.

“It was a good move for Finn, and a big move for him in terms of coming to us, there’s a little bit of settling in as well," said Carrick. “I know he’s capable of goals, he scored goals before he came to us and that’s two good goals for him now, that’ll do him the world of good, I’m sure there’s more to come.

“We knew what he was capable of and his strengths and I think you can see that, there’s a little bit of learning who you’re playing with and what they’re good at and wavelengths.

“You can see that connection now, the boys are seeing what Finn does and Finn is seeing what the other lads do.

“Finn is obviously talented, he’s got his head in the right place, he’s focused, he wants to do better and he’s got a great attitude.”

While Boro’s young forward line caused Leicester problems all afternoon, it was the club’s experienced heads who kept the Foxes at bay for most of the game at the other end.

Carrick deployed a back three to great effect, limiting Leicester to just a couple of shots on target, with the Boro boss delighted by the efforts of his senior players.

“There was a hell of a lot of experience still in our team, even with the amount of injuries and experience that we’re missing," he said.

“If you go through the team, (Matt) Clarke, Paddy (McNair), Luke (Ayling), Lewis (O’Brien), Dan (Barlaser) and Riley (McGree) are all experienced, mixed with the others who are at different stages.

“Rav (van den Berg) played like he had a 35-year-old head on his shoulders, experience helps, it felt like a strong team and the senior boys really made a difference for us.

“We needed it the whole game in terms of the focus and attitude of the boys, other than the last ten minutes we controlled the game really well and defended really well.”

Boro ripped up the form book with victory at Leicester ending their own four-game winless run after the Foxes had racked up four straight wins ahead of the fixture.

Carrick’s men became the first team to win at Leicester since November and have triumphed in three of their last four matches away from home.
