KIERAN TRIPPIER admits Bayern Munich’s interest in him was a “compliment”, but the England international has sought to draw a line under this month’s transfer uncertainty by reaffirming his “complete commitment” to Newcastle United.

Bayern Munich lodged two separate bids for Trippier this month, first trying to sign the full-back on loan and then making a permanent offer for his services.

However, despite their confirmed need to make sales at some stage to ensure they comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations, Newcastle rejected both offers with Eddie Howe insisting there was no way he wanted to lose his on-field skipper.

Trippier was fully aware of Bayern’s interest, and admits he took pride from being approached by one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

But with the situation now resolved, the 33-year-old is adamant his commitment to the black-and-white cause never wavered, and is excited about what the future could hold on Tyneside.

“It’s always a compliment when a team like Bayern come in for you, but I want to make history with the club, win a trophy and help the club grow for as long as possible,” said Trippier, whose resolute defensive performance helped Newcastle beat Fulham 2-0 last night as they booked a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

“I hope everybody knows my commitment to this club. It has not changed since I first arrived. It’s a transfer window, things happen, it’s not put me off or anything. I’m at Newcastle.

“Things happen in the background. I had loads of conversations with the manager, everything was positive, nothing has changed, and I’m committed to Newcastle.”

Trippier is one of a number of Newcastle players to have been linked with a possible move away from Tyneside this month, with Eddie Howe having admitted last night that “someone could leave” ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The uncertainty is hardly helpful, but Trippier has praised his team-mates for the way in which they have retained their focus despite the intense speculation.

“It’s a transfer window,” he said. “The players are committed and nothing will change. We have a great squad, I’ve spoken about the togetherness in our group. Nothing will take us off track.

“Loads of rumours go round and it didn’t put us off (against Fulham). We can only focus on what we do on the pitch, and what goes on in the background goes on in the background.”

Trippier endured a difficult December period which included errors against Everton and Tottenham, and a crucial mistake that led to a last-minute goal in the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea, which also saw him miss a penalty in the shootout.

The full-back showed signs of being back to his best last night, though, with his crosses setting u goals for Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn.

“I’m happy to stand here and say I’ve gone through some bad moments,” said Trippier. “It’s not like we do it on purpose, it happens.

“I’ve been in this situation in my career before, but I just hope this is the turning point and I know I can do better. I recognise when I’m in a bad moment, but it’s a new year and a new chapter.”
