FABIAN Schar says his one dream at Newcastle United is to win a trophy after the defender put pen to paper on a new contract at St James' Park.

Schar has made 169 appearances for the Magpies since arriving from Deportivo La Coruña in July 2018 and says he feels at home at Newcastle.

It hasn't always been easy for the defender, who was out of favour during Steve Bruce's time in charge, but the 32-year-old has been a hugely important figure since Eddie Howe's arrival.

Schar's contract was due to expire this summer but he's now agreed a one-year extension.

"I've said it a lot of times, but I feel really at home here," said the centre-half.

"I feel so comfortable living in Newcastle; I love the city and I love playing for the club and the incredible fans. I can't say enough how much I love them, and how much their support means to me.

"Playing for this team where I feel so comfortable with all my team-mates and with the coaching staff feels really like a family for me, so I'm really grateful to stay here a bit longer and hopefully to have some more exciting times.

"I felt comfortable since my first day. Obviously there were difficult times for me personally and as a club, but I've always felt comfortable here. That made this decision so easy. I'm really looking forward to the future."

Howe is delighted Schar has committed himself to the Magpies for a further 12 months.

He said: "Fabian has been excellent for us. Since I've come to the football club, he's been a model of consistency and a big part of our success.

"He's defended very well but he's hugely talented with the ball as well, so we're delighted that he's extended his time here."

And Schar was keen to praise Howe for his role in getting both Newcastle and his career on Tyneside back on track.

He said: "I say this all the time, Eddie has been massive, not just for me but the whole club.

"He came in a difficult situation but trusted me from day one and made me the player I wanted to be and player I am. I'm really thankful to him and the coaching staff for giving me the confidence to play my game."

Schar has scored 11 times in black and white, his most memorable undoubtedly the final goal in the 4-1 Champions League hammering of PSG in October.

"It's difficult to pick one moment," said the defender when asked for his Newcastle highlights.

"For me personally probably the game against Paris, scoring that 4-1 goal was a really special night. As a club, going to Wembley or the last two years, to be part of it and enjoy every moment.

"I look forward to playing every game and I try to leave my heart on the pitch and play for the badge."

After a testing recent spell, Schar now hopes Saturday's derby win over Sunderland can spark Newcastle's season back into life. He says he "believes in this team more than ever" and is desperate to win some silverware before his time at St James' Park comes to an end.

"We've had some tough moments but the season is long, you have highs and lows," he said.

"The team and the family we are here, I'm really confident in the players and the club.

"We are coming out of a difficult moment but we will stick together as we always do and I'm sure we'll be back to our best.

"I think we've had some crazy years in the last two years, a lot of exciting times.

"I want to make everything possible, we have to see how the season is going and what is possible but I believe in this team more than ever.

"If I had one dream in my career, it would be to win a trophy with Newcastle at some point. Hopefully I'll still be here when that happens."
