SCOTLAND are preparing to make an audacious effort to tempt Newcastle's Anthony Gordon into switching allegiance on the back of his latest England snub.

Gordon has been in outstanding form for the Magpies, with his club displays leading head coach Eddie Howe to say recently that he was "sure" the 22-year-old would be on Gareth Southgate's radar.

Despite his excellent displays for Newcastle, Gordon was again left out of the England squad for this week's get-together and games against Malta and North Macedonia, and was overlooked a second time after Southgate was forced to name some replacements due to withdrawals, which included Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

Gordon was born on Merseyside but would qualify to play for Scotland through his paternal grandparents. He has represented England throughout the age groups and played 16 times for the Under-21s, winning Player of the Tournament on his way to helping the Young Lions win the European Championships last year.

Despite impressing for the Under-21s and enjoying a superb start to the season for Newcastle, Gordon is still waiting for his first England senior call-up.

His snubs have alerted Scotland boss Steve Clarke and assistant John Carver, who have already made a move for Newcastle forwards Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes this season and are also showing an interest in Tino Livramento, who also qualifies for Scotland.

Former Newcastle coach Carver told the Daily Record: “If someone’s got a relation who is Scottish, then we have to look at it. It’s then down to what he decides but we are aware that these are big decisions about their future.

“It’s no secret that Newcastle is my team and I watch them more than anybody. We are aware they have several outstanding players, who have never been capped by England at senior level, who qualify for Scotland.”

Gordon has four goals in his 11 Premier League appearances this season and has been one of Newcastle's brightest lights.

His boss Howe is certain it's a matter of when rather than if the England call will come.

He said recently: “I’m sure Gareth is aware of him and I’m sure he’s been aware of him for a long time.

“All Anthony can do is just keep performing like he has and keep his mentality as strong as it has been. He has been a joy to work with and he is reaping the benefits.

"He has got so much ability, so much to give and he has got the attitude to go with it as well. He has got desire to improve, I see it every day in training, it is great to see him rewarded with that.”
