An amateur football club has gone unexpectedly viral after sharing an online post about a transfer of a player.

When Whitley Bay FC took to social media earlier this week to say that their goalkeeper Dan Lister had handed in a transfer request, few people realised the post would be viewed by people in India, Taiwan and beyond.

The club, who ply their trade in the Northern League, might be currently preparing for an away trip against Guisborough Town on Saturday (October 14), but off the pitch, they are enjoying worldwide social media attention.

In a post on social media on Monday (October 9), Whitley Bay FC said: "Whitley Bay player Dan Lister has requested a transfer. Any interested clubs please contact the club by email at club@whitleybayfc.com."

Despite first believing the online post might be seen by a handful of people, the club were surprised to see the post rack up over 1400 comments and 1400 reactions - with people from across the world commenting that they'd shared it in their country.

While some of the comments got a little out of hand, with people saying that they'd shared it in 'Wilko', 'Manchester United' and the fictional location of Wakanda, there were some genuine comments from people in Australia, Thailand and Japan.

After the success of their initial post concerning Dan Lister, Whitley Bay FC shared a follow-up post to see if anyone internationally wanted to follow the North East amateur club, before sharing the fact that they'd won the FA Vase four times.
