STEVE Gibson remains "calm" despite Middlesbrough's disappointing start to the Championship season, with the club's chairman and head coach Michael Carrick both on the same wavelength and sharing the same vision for the side going forward.

After coming so close to winning promotion to the Premier League last season, Boro lost a number of star players, with top scorer Chuba Akpom signing for Ajax and loan players such as Cameron Archer, Ryan Giles, Zack Steffen and Aaron Ramsey returning to their parent clubs.

That forced Boro into something of a summer overhaul, with 12 new signings arriving - the majority of which are younger players who, while deemed to have big potential, it's accepted will need time to settle.

Boro had hoped to build on last season's top six finish and targeted another promotion push this season, but Carrick's side head for Sheffield Wednesday tonight (8pm kick-off) bottom of the Championship table and still looking for their first win of the campaign.

Carrick, though, isn't concerned by the standings at this stage. He's stressed on a number of occasions that he remains calm and has revealed that Gibson - who he speaks to regularly - feels the same way.

Carrick said: “Of course, I speak to him - he’s not hiding from me yet! We speak often and the mood is calm.

"There is an understanding of what we’re trying to achieve and how we go about it. We’re all working together and that’s a big part of it.

"Me, the players, the club in general, the supporters, it’s important that we’re all in it together. There is no me or them, the players or the rest - we’re all in it together and we’re all fighting together.

"We understand it’s a bit of a process, but at the same time, I can’t accept when it’s not quite going your way. You’ve got to do something about it and that’s my job and my responsibility and what I enjoy doing. I back the players 100%."

Asked whether there was an acceptance that patience would be required this season, Carrick said: "I wouldn't say I accept it, no.

"In terms of the situation we're not accepting results. It's how you deal with it that's the important thing.

"Yeah, there was a fairly big turnaround in players, but I've said it to you enough times now, how much I believe in the boys whatever age they are and however long they've been here.

"There's certainly not an acceptance that it will take a certain amount of time. We want it to be here and now. Everyone does connected with the football club.

"It doesn't always quite happen, but we'll find a way, I'm convinced of that and the players are good players, terrific players, we have a really good squad, so we have to keep pushing and getting better and improving as quickly as we can."

The togetherness of the players, staff, club bosses and the supporters will help Boro through this testing period, said Carrick.

“I don’t think I even need to emphasise that, to be honest, I think it’s there and it’s obvious," he said.

"We’re all doing that as a club, as me and the staff and the players and as the staff above me and certainly the supporters. You see that in the numbers and how they support the club. So I don’t think I need to emphasise that because it’s there.

"Words are easy, but it’s what actually happens and the actions that are most important, and for me, I can see as clear as day the togetherness and it gives me real encouragement."
