Middlesbrough's winless start to the Championship season continued with a 4-2 defeat at West Brom. Here's how the players rated:

6 Dieng: Couldn’t do anything about the goals, not helped by poor defending in front.

3 Smith: Nightmare return to the side for Smith. Phillips had the beating of him all afternoon, backed off Swift for the second goal, sent off just six minutes into the second half.

4 Fry: Never settled. West Brom caused most of their problems down the flanks, but Smith needed more support.

5 Lenihan: Wasn’t helped by full-backs and lack of control in front. Tried to talk Engel through the game.

4 Engel: Costly mistake for the third goal when he gifted possession to Thomas-Asante. Missed a chance to make immediate amends.

5 Howson: Struggled to get a grip of the game. Likely to feel aggrieved after Kipre appeared to give him a shove for first goal.

6 Hackney: Saw plenty of the ball in the first half but didn’t do much with it.

6 Silvera: Did well for the goal, beating Phillips and crossing well for Latte Lath. Bright flashes in the first half. Faded in the second.

4 Rogers: West Brom know what Rogers is capable of with the forward having come through the ranks at the Hawthorns. But he was a passenger on his return. Never got into the game.

5 McGree: Had an early chance when he robbed Ajayi of the ball in the box. Some nice touches but nowhere near as effective as he can be. Replaced just before hour mark.

7 Latte Lath: Boro’s best player. The striker built on his promising debut with another bright display. Scored the goal with a good header, could have had an equaliser just before half-time.
