How did the players fare in Sunderland's 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town?

SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):

5 Patterson: Didn’t have a chance with either of Ipswich’s goals, but was almost beaten from a long way out in the second half

4 Hume: Looked shaky all day and was deservedly sent off for a second yellow card after pulling back Davis

5 O’Nien: Made a sensational goalline clearance to keep out Davis’ first-half shot, but struggled positionally on occasion

4 Ballard: Never really got to grips with the fluidity of Ipswich’s three-man attack – was pulled out of position on a number of occasions

6 Cirkin: Put in a decent shift defensively, and delivered the cross that enabled Neil to claw a goal back late on

7 NEIL: Scored Sunderland’s goal with a composed finish – then nearly claimed a dramatic leveller in the 101st minute

6 Ekwah: The pick of Sunderland’s players for the opening hour, particularly in the first half when he got his side onto the front foot

5 Roberts: Started reasonably brightly, but became less and less effective the longer the game went on

6 Bellingham: Played some probing passes in the opening quarter of the game, but wasted a golden opportunity when he shot over

5 Clarke: Saw a reasonable amount of the ball down Sunderland’s left without ever really causing a threat

4 Hemir: Just about held his own in the physical battle against Ipswich’s centre-halves, but lacked composure when in possession

Subs:

6 Pritchard (for Bellingham, 58): Helped add some urgency to Sunderland’s attacking play in the closing stages

5 Ba (for Hemir, 58): Wasn’t really able to influence the course of the game in the final half-hour

Gooch (for Ekwah, 86)

Huggins (for Cirkin, 90)

(not used): Bishop (gk), Batth, Triantis, Rigg, Bennette.

IPSWICH (3-4-3):

Hladky 6; Donacien 7 (Ball 90), Woolfenden 7, Burgess 7; Burns 8, Morsy 6, Luongo 6, Davis 8 (Leigh 90); Chaplin 7 (Hutchinson 76), BROADHEAD 8 (Harness 73), Hirst 7 (Ladapo 76).

Subs (not used): Slicker (gk), Evans, Taylor, Jackson.

Man Of The Match: NATHAN BROADHEAD – The former Sunderland striker scored one goal and set up the other on his return to the Stadium of Light.
