SUNDERLAND have agreed a deal for Nathan Bishop – and the youngster’s move from Manchester United should be completed once Erik ten Hag’s side have completed their ongoing tour of the United States.

The Black Cats have agreed the framework of a permanent switch for the 23-year-old goalkeeper, who has been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer.

While Anthony Patterson remains firmly established as Sunderland’s number one shot-stopper, Tony Mowbray currently lacks any senior cover in the goalkeeping department following the departure of Alex Bass on loan to AFC Wimbledon earlier this summer.

With Adam Richardson currently injured, 16-year-old Matty Young was between the sticks for the 3-2 win over New Mexico United that formed part of Sunderland’s US tour.

While Young performed impressively in New Mexico, he is not yet regarded as experienced enough to play a prominent role within Sunderland’s first-team squad next season.

As a result, the Black Cats’ recruitment team have moved for Bishop, who will be allowed to leave Manchester United once the club’s players return to England following the end of their Stateside trip.

David de Gea’s departure means ten Hag currently needs Bishop within the squad as cover, and the youngster could feature in tomorrow morning’s friendly with Wrexham, which will see Manchester United field a team comprised mainly of academy and youth-team players.

Manchester United’s final game of their US tour sees them line up against Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas on July 30, so Bishop should be allowed to link up with Sunderland next week, ahead of the opening weekend of the Championship season.

The youngster started his career with Southend United, and joined Manchester United’s youth ranks in January 2020. An England Under-20 international, he spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Mansfield Town, appearing in the League Two play-off final at Wembley as the Stags narrowly failed to win promotion.

His current Manchester United contract is due to expire next summer as he agreed a one-year extension to his previous deal earlier this summer.
