DARLINGTON have taken ex-Leeds United midfielder Romario Vieira on trial.

Vieira, whose older brother Ronaldo plays for Torino on loan from Sampdoria, featured for Quakers in Saturday's 2-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Harrogate.

The midfielder previously had a brief stint training with Darlington before moving abroad, but is now back in the UK and on the lookout for a new club, with Armstrong having another look at the once-capped Guinea-Bissau international.

"Romario, we had him a couple of years back but he had an offer to play abroad," said Armstrong.

"He's back again. He played at Tadcaster a couple of seasons ago. We'll have a look at him again. He's a very tidy player, a Leeds lad with good pedigree. We're probably a bit shy in that midfield area so we're having a look."

Despite defeat to Harrogate, Armstrong took a lot of positives from the game as his side continue their preparations for the coming National League North campaign.

Quakers more than held their own in the first half against the League Two visitors and it needed a wonderstrike from Abraham Odoh 10 minutes into the second half to break the deadlock. Odoh then teed up Luke Armstrong, the son of Alun, to score the second.

Darlington's upbeat boss said: "I thought it was a really good workout for us.

"We created enough opportunities to score a couple of goals and Mitch (Curry) is disappointed he hasn't come away with a goal.

"I'm really pleased with how it's going. We worked really hard in midweek, that's why we had a few niggles and we were missing a few players today, because we ran the legs off them, but it needs to be done. We go again on Tuesday and will try to make some changes but it will be difficult again because we haven't got that many players. Hopefully we'll get one or two back but I'm not rushing it."

Darlington host Boro's Under-21s at Blackwell Meadows on Tuesday night, kick off 7.45pm.
