FORMER Middlesbrough first team prospect Ste Walker is on trial at Carlisle United as he looks for a new club after his Boro exit.

Walker was an England youth international who Boro had high hopes for as he came through the academy ranks.

He made his Championship debut for his hometown club in 2019, one of seven league appearances that season under Jonathan Woodgate.

Walker joined Crewe on loan for the second half of the 2019/20 season - one of two spells at Gresty Road - and also had stints with MK Dons and Tranmere, but was unable to force his way back into the Boro first team picture.

His contract at the Riverside was due to expire at the end of last season but his exit was agreed by mutual consent a few months early, and he set about looking for a new club.

The 22-year-old is now hoping to earn a contract at Carlisle, who are preparing for the upcoming League One campaign after winning promotion from League Two through the play-offs last season.

And he's going about it the right way, scoring the winner in a 2-1 win away at Annan Athletic on Friday night, according to the News and Star.

It appears Walker and former Newcastle United goalkeeper Dan Langley, who is also on trial, will get another chance to impress when Carlisle face Gretna 208 on Tuesday night.

“It was pleasing for them to get 45 minutes and they continue to train with us,” said assistant manager Gavin Skelton.

“It’s just ongoing. They’ve trained well and played [on Friday], both did reasonably well which we’ll be pleased with, and that will continue.”
