LUIS Semedo has thanked Benfica in an emotional farewell ahead of the striker completing his expected move to Sunderland this summer.

The teenage striker developed through the ranks with Benfica to the fringes of the first team but is set to become a free agent.

Sunderland bosses have been in discussions with Semedo's representatives and, providing he's able to secure the necessary documentation to play in England, he'll join the Black Cats this summer.

Ahead of his Benfica release, Semedo took to social media to tell of his "eternal thanks" to the Portuguese giants.

He said: "My association with this huge club has come to an end. It was thirteen years with an eagle on my chest. There were thirteen unique years. I ask everyone and especially the Benfica supporters to understand me.

"A boy came to the club that I love, who instilled in me essential values for the man and player I am today. I thank all my colleagues, my psychologist, coaches, delegates, physiotherapists and the other members without exception, as they have made a huge contribution to my evolution.

"I will carry everyone in my heart for the rest of my life and I will always remember the wonderful moments I lived here. Thank you for making me a better professional and, above all, for enriching this path we share. Eternally grateful. See you someday. Thank you very much @slbenfica."

Semedo, a tall, athletic frontman, made his debut for Benfica B in January 2022 having starred in the club's successful UEFA Youth League campaign. He was top scorer in the competition in the 2021/22 season.

Although Semedo never made a senior first team appearance for Benfica, he is a Portugal Under-20 international. Like Necar Triantis, whose move from Central Coast Mariners was confirmed last week, Sunderland see enormous potential in Semedo.

Sunderland's positive start to the summer window will also see them wrap up the signing of Jobe Bellingham from Birmingham City.

A deal for the midfielder is agreed, with Bellingham set for Sunderland after making 22 Championship appearances for Birmingham last season.

Bellingham was in attendance at the Stadium of Light for the play-off semi-final first leg against Luton Town last month.

Meanwhile, Franceso Farioli - the Italian boss who was linked with Sunderland at the end of last season - is in talks with Celtic as the Scottish champions look to replace Ange Postecoglou, who left for Tottenham.

Farioli is keen on a move to the UK and was also linked with Watford before Sunderland's Championship rivals appointed Valerien Ismael.

Celtic have also held talks with their former boss Brendan Rodgers and could make a move for Manchester City No 2 Enzo Maresca.
