AARON Ramsey has told of his "devastation" at Middlesbrough coming up short in their bid to make the Premier League.

Ramsey only spent half of the season at Boro, joining on deadline day in the January transfer window on loan from Aston Villa, and made only 11 appearances on Teesside - but made a huge impact in a short space of time.

He scored four goals, made another and appeared to be hitting top form when his season was prematurely cut short by injury, a cruel blow for the youngster and it proved to be a major setback for Boro.

Ramsey missed Boro's last four games of the regular season and was forced to watch on from the stands as Michael Carrick's side were edged out by Coventry City in the play-off semi-final double header. Ramsey was gutted Boro's season ended in heartbreak, all the more so because he was unable to play his part in final weeks of the season.

"Absolutely devastated we couldn’t go all the way and get this club back to where it belongs," tweeted the 20-year-old.

"Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone at Boro. It’s been a pleasure to wear this shirt! You guys have been terrific to me. Support is always top. What a club! #UTB."

Ramsey spent the first half of the season on loan at Norwich City but, after undergoing knee surgery in December, was recalled by Villa in early January. Boro then made their move, with Ramsey following Villa teammate Cameron Archer to the Riverside - Aaron Danks playing a key role in the capture of the pair having worked with both during his time at the Premier League club.

Villa are now plotting summer talks to determine the best course of action with both Ramsey and Archer moving forward.

Boss Unai Emery sanctioned the January loan moves to Boro but is likely to want to assess both players in pre-season before deciding whether they are part of his Premier League plans for next season.

Archer has twice impressed on loan in the Championship with Preston and then Boro over the course of the last two seasons and is highly rated at Villa Park, but his path to the first team is currently blocked by Ollie Watkins, with Emery also said to be in the market for another centre-forward this summer.

If Archer looks likely to spend another season on the fringes next season, it's not yet clear whether Villa would sanction another loan move or consider cashing in.

As for Ramsey, he spent the season before the most recent at Cheltenham in League One, and although he impressed in the Championship this term, his campaign was disrupted by injury at both Norwich and Boro.

He's a year younger than Archer so another season on loan in the Championship is not out of the question. If that did prove to be the case, Boro would be well placed to re-sign the winger.

Ramsey's immediate focus is on recovering from the injury that ruled him out of the final weeks of Boro's season. After the frustration of missing the play-offs, the winger was this week forced to pull out of the England Under-20 squad for the World Cup in Argentina.

Quizzed on his loanees - specifically Archer - at the end of last week before Villa's trip to Liverpool, Emery said: "Of course, the season has finished for some players. Archer, we wanted him to have success with Middlesbrough and play for promotion but, in the end, it was not possible.

“But we will analyse. In the next 10 days after Saturday and then after Brighton, we will sit and decide about the strategy with all of those (loan) players.”
