TONY MOWBRAY admits he “does not know what his future holds” in the wake of Sunderland’s season-ending defeat at Luton Town.

The Black Cats’ play-off campaign came crashing to an end as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road, meaning their campaign has now reached its conclusion.

Attention now switches to the summer, with Mowbray’s future as Sunderland head coach a major area of uncertainty.

The Teessider has a contract to the end of next season, and wants to remain in his current position as head coach.

However, the Sunderland hierarchy were heavily linked with a possible move for Italian coach Francesco Farioli last month, with Mowbray aware of the speculation.

He discussed the situation with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman earlier this month, but clearly still feels that there are questions to be answered.

“I’ve enjoyed it, but who knows what my future holds,” said Mowbray. “Let’s wait and see. Do I want to be here next season? I do, yes. But let’s wait and see how it goes, and what the summer brings.

“I don’t know what will happen next. I’ll just get on with it. I’ve got a contract so I’ll just keep going. I only mention that off the speculation off recent weeks. Let’s wait and see.”

Farioli is not the only coach to have been linked with a possible move to Sunderland in recent weeks, and Mowbray would clearly like to receive some clarity about the club’s plans now a place in the Premier League is no longer on the table.

“Do I feel insecure? Not at all,” he continued. “Modern-day football clubs can do what they want. I’m pretty relaxed. I feel like I’ve come in here and managed to work with these young players, create a team environment that has done alright despite huge losses of some very important footballers.”
