EDDIE HOWE has confirmed that Miguel Almiron will be sidelined for around six weeks after suffering a thigh injury in training.

Almiron has already had a scan on his injured thigh, with Howe confirming his injury is a serious one.

“Miggy pulled a thigh muscle in training,” said the Newcastle boss, after Alexander Isak’s stoppage-time penalty lifted the Magpies back to within a point of fourth-placed Tottenham. “Unfortunately, it’s quite a bad one. It’s going to be six weeks.”

Fabian Schar will also not be on international duty next week, with the centre-half having been left out of the Switzerland squad because of his own injury issues.

Howe said: “Fabian’s been carrying lots of different things in the last few weeks. He’s been carrying a foot problem and also had concussion, so I think it’s just a chance for him to rest his body and go again.”

Allan Saint-Maximin was replaced at half-time this evening, with the Frenchman’s hamstrings giving cause for concern.

“Allan wasn’t quite right today, physically, I didn’t think,” said Howe. “He’s been carrying a tight hamstring. I don’t think it’s a pull, it’s just a little bit of tightness. For me, it was obvious during that first half that he probably wouldn’t be able to carry on.

“I didn’t want to expose Callum (Wilson) today, he hasn’t done a lot of training, so I decided to go with Elliot (Anderson) and he repaid me, he did really well. Hopefully, we’ll have Callum and Maxi fit and available after the international break.”
