NEWCASTLE UNITED have made a fresh move for Harrison Ashby – and are increasingly confident that the West Ham United full-back will follow Anthony Gordon through the St James’ Park entrance door in the final four days of the transfer window.

Gordon is on Tyneside this morning undergoing a medical as he completes the formalities of his move from Everton.

Newcastle’s offer of around £45m was accepted yesterday, with Everton having given Gordon permission to head to the North-East.

Provided there are no unforeseen issues in the 21-year-old’s medical, his transfer should be formally completed within the next 24 hours. However, he will not be eligible to make his debut in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg with Southampton as he has already played for Everton in this season’s competition.

Gordon will become Newcastle’s second signing of the month, following Garang Kuol, who has already left on loan to Hearts, but the Magpies also want to add Ashby to their ranks ahead of Tuesday night’s deadline.

Newcastle’s initial offer for the 21-year-old right-back was rejected earlier this month, but the Magpies have signalled their desire to return to the negotiating table and another round of discussions should take place before the end of the weekend.

Ashby, a Scotland Under-21 international who has made two senior appearances for West Ham in this season’s Europa Conference League, is due to become a free agent in the summer and has turned down the Hammers’ offer of a new deal at the London Stadium.

The West Ham hierarchy appear resigned to losing the youngster, but are determined to hold on for the best possible deal.

A compromise should be possible ahead of Tuesday night’s deadline, with Ashby understood to be keen to move to the North-East and Newcastle’s recruitment team increasingly confident of being able to tie up a transfer.

Eddie Howe is keen to sign a right-back this month as he wants to secure additional cover for Kieran Trippier, with Javier Manquillo currently the only alternative option on the right of the back four.

Newcastle held discussions with Real Valladolid over Ivan Fresneda earlier in the month, but with Arsenal having made a strong move of their own for the 18-year-old, the Magpies’ recruitment team concluded that the Spaniard no longer represented any value.
