Darlington defender Paddy Almond is to undergo surgery.

He remains at Royal London Hospital where he was taken after Quakers’ match at Southend United 11 days ago.

It was his first start for the club but he had to be substituted in the second half.

Scans on the night of the match detected a bleed on the brain and Almond has since remained under observation.

Fears that surgery would be required within hours of his arrival at the hospital were allayed.

But a Darlington statement today reads: “Paddy’s medical team have completed a case review after his latest scan and have decided that he should have an operation next week to clear the old blood in his brain that might cause clotting in the future.

“Paddy remains very positive, he believes that this will give him the best chances for long term recovery.

“Everyone at Darlington FC and throughout the world of football wish Paddy all the best.”

With the consent of Almond and his family, the Darlington FC Supporters Group launched a fundraiser last week and kind-hearted fans raised over £13,000 for the player to help him financially while he recovers.

Among thse to make donations were Newcastle United's Issac Hayden, who put £1,000 towards the final total.

The former Sunderland youngster is a non-contract player at Darlington, so is only paid when he plays.
