Lucas de Bolle has seen a specialist in London this week in an attempt to get to the bottom of concussion issues that he's suffered with since the summer.

The 20-year-old is on loan at Hamilton but has only played once for the Scottish Championship side due to the after-effects of a bout of concussion that was initially sustained in a Newcastle Under-21s game in August.

His move to Hamilton was delayed but after the switch got the green light, De Bolle made his debut in mid-September, only to then suffer a relapse the following week when he was away with Scotland's Under-21s.

The youngster has been in and out of training since while he manages the issue, with after-effects said to include blurred vision.

To get to the bottom of the problem, De Bolle has had an appointment with a specialist this week and Hamilton boss John Rankin says initial results are positive, with the manager hoping the young midfielder will now able be able to step up his training.

He told the Daily Record: "Lucas got an MRI scan on Tuesday. It is something with his vestibula system and the ear sending messages to the brain. That is the explanation I have.

"He is a lot more comfortable with that now than he was before. Hopefully he is not too far away. He had to go to London to get the MRI and see a physio who specialises in this sort of thing.

"As far as we are aware Lucas' scan was clear and he was back at Newcastle on Wednesday morning. So, hopefully, he can progress from there and be back involved very soon.

"He's not trained in a while so he will still be a wee bit away in terms of fitness."

De Bolle has been with Newcastle since 2015 and was included in the first team squad for the first time for the game against Aston Villa in February this year.
