Eddie Howe believes the penalty shoot-out success against Crystal Palace will further galvanise his already buzzing Newcastle United squad.

And the head coach says his side are in a "really good frame of mind" as they prepare for the visit of Chelsea this weekend, with Howe looking to sign off for the World Cup break in positive fashion.

Howe also dismissed any concerns that Bruno Guimarães will let the disappointment of his spot-kick linger, backing the Brazilian to shrug off the frustration of his missed penalty.

Bruno looked devastated after his missed effort but Howe says the midfielder will quickly move on.

"He cares so much and wants to do the best for the team," said Howe of Bruno.

"Everyone can miss a penalty. He's not immune to that. We'll pick him up. He'll be fine.

"He did very well when he came on the pitch. The guys who entered the pitch really did make a difference. It happens, he'll be fine."

Bruno gave the whole stadium a lift when he was introduced shortly after the hour mark and Howe felt the midfielder, alongside Kierian Trippier, Sven Botman and Miguel Almiron, made a difference from the bench.

He said: "We needed that lift, whether that came from a substitution or moment in the game, we needed that energy from the crowd and they certainly gave it to us in the last moments of the game.

"I thought Bruno, despite missing the penalty, played very well. The attitude of the players was so good, they wanted to come on, they wanted to make a difference, and they did help us."

Howe believes the cup success will further enhance the feel good factor around the club.

Asked whether it can further galvanise his squad, he said: "I think it can. I think it's really good for the squad that we go through and the players that came in feel the positivity of winning. We keep our momentum.

"We go into then next game in a really good frame of mind and hopefully we can finish this sequence of games off well."
