DESPITE the best efforts of Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, there were to be no late additions for those three teams while Hartlepool United manager to secure one late signing on transfer deadline day.

All four teams now have their current squads until January at the earliest after the window slammed shut at 11pm last night.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe conceded earlier in the week that the club would have to look at loan deals if they were to make any progress on the transfer front.

After having two bids rejected for Watford forward Joao Pedro earlier in the window, the Magpies late efforts to lure him to Tyneside were brought to an end after he publicly declared he would be staying at Vicarage Road. Everton were also providing competition for Joao Pedro's signature.

Sunderland were unlikely to make significant progress on transfer deadline day after making a trio of signings on Wednesday.

Edouard Michut, Abdoullah Ba and Amad Diallo all joined the club and were unveiled to the Stadium of Light crowd at half-time during their 3-0 win over Rotherham United. Reports suggested ex Black Cat keeper Vito Mannone was in talks with the club but he has remained with Monaco.

After the defeat to Watford in midweek, Boro boss Chris Wilder was keen to bring in an experienced striker and a holding midfielder to the club before the deadline.

Suggestions were that Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka was poised to join the club and a deal was agreed. However, an injury to Bees midfielder Christian Norgaard has put the breaks on a move to Teesside with Onyeka staying at Brentford to act as cover.

Hartlepool United manager Paul Hartley told BBC Radio Tees Sport on deadline day that he wanted at least 'three or four' new signings before the end of the window. In the end, they have had to settle for one as Clarke Odour signed on loan from Barnsley until the end of the season.
