Chris Wilder has earmarked bringing in a striker with experience before the end of the transfer window tomorrow night as Middlesbrough look to made last minute additions.

Up to three forwards have been at the forefront of Wilder’s mind as Boro looked to bolster their attacking options at the beginning of the summer.

Rodrigo Muniz, Marcus Forss and Matthew Hoppe have come into the club but the feeling is that the American Hoppe is a development signing and one that the club need to nurture for the future.

With a deal seemingly off for Preston frontman Emil Riis Jakobsen, Boro are still retaining hopes of bringing in a striker before Thursday’s deadline. Jorgan Strand Larsen is continuing to push for a move away from Groningen after a rejected bid from Boro but irrespective of his situation, another frontman is needed.

When asked specifically about a striker, Wilder replied: “Yeah (still want a striker) because if you look at the players we’ve got, Chuba (Akpom) is out for another five weeks which is really disappointing.

“We’ve signed a couple of younger lads from a development point of view but can get a little bit more from Forss with his experience and the money we’ve paid for him. But he’s still a young lad. And Rodrigo (Muniz) is a young boy as well.”

Muniz got off the mark for his new team last night in Boro’s 2-1 defeat to Watford as the Brazilian popped up in the fourth minute with a header to give them the lead.

However, a striker who has been around the game for a while is something he desires as Wilder continued: “We’d still like a bit more experience and a bit more knowhow. The reason we’ve gone deep in is we believe something good will pop up. We’ve been aggressive in our approach and ambitious in trying to, but when nothing becomes available… If it doesn’t then we’ll go with what we’ve got.”

The deadline for the window is on Thursday 1st September at 11pm.

Following their late 2-1 defeat to Watford, Boro will not return to action until next Monday when they host North-East neighbours Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium.

The Black Cats have recently appointed Tony Mowbray as their new head coach.
