Alex Neil is on the verge of quitting as Sunderland manager after being given permission to speak to Stoke City regarding their managerial vacancy.

He is in now talks with the Championship rivals to replace Micheal O’Neill, who was sacked this week.

Stoke are fourth-bottom of the table with four points from five games, whereas Sunderland are fifth and positivity was high following promotion last season, so today’s developments are a hammer blow to the club.

Neil was at Sunderland’s Academy of Light this morning, but a press conference looking ahead to tomorrow’s game with Norwich City was scrapped just minutes before it was due to take place.

It is understood Neil has already said goodbyes to staff at Sunderland’s training ground.

The Black Cats have released a statement, which reads: “Sunderland AFC can confirm that Alex Neil has entered into discussions with Stoke City regarding their current managerial vacancy.

“Following a formal approach by SCFC, the Club is contractually obliged to permit the Head Coach to start a dialogue with the Potters.

“The club is committed to retaining Alex’s services as Head Coach and will be making no further comment at this moment in time.”
