MIDDLESBROUGH have completed the signing of midfielder Alex Mowatt from West Brom.

Mowatt has joined the Teessiders on a season-long loan from the Baggies, having fallen out of favour under Steve Bruce.

The 27-year-old made his footballing breakthrough with Leeds United, having joined the club’s youth academy at the age of nine.

He made his senior debut in August 2013 and went on to make 125 senior appearances for the West Yorkshire club before moving on to join Barnsley in 2017.

The midfielder spent four years with the Tykes, playing more than 150 games, and came close to joining Boro when he eventually left Oakwell last summer.

Instead, he opted to join West Brom, but while he was a regular performer for most of last season at the Hawthorns, he has found himself shuffled to the periphery under Bruce.

He was an 89th-minute substitute as the Baggies drew against Middlesbrough on the opening day of the campaign, but was an unused substitute in West Brom’s draw with Watford last weekend.

His arrival on Teesside bolster’s Boro’s central-midfield resources, and will help plug the gap left by Marcus Tavernier’s departure in a £12m move to Bournemouth earlier this summer.
