How did the players fare in Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Coventry City?

SUNDERLAND (3-5-2):

8 Patterson: Commanded his line well all afternoon and made a sensational first-half save as he tipped Panzo’s shot onto the bar

6 Ballard: Had to work extremely hard on his senior Sunderland debut, but stuck to his task well despite Coventry getting on top

6 Batth: Won his physical battle for Gyokeres for most of the game, but was occasionally panicked in possession

6 Cirkin: Looked comfortable on the left of Sunderland’s back three and tried to step out with the ball whenever possible

7 Gooch: Performed his defensive duties efficiently and delivered a brilliant cross for Clarke’s headed goal

6 Embleton: Made some effective breaks during the first half and came close when he curled just over at the start of the second

7 Evans: Was an important figure at the heart of midfield and just about held things together as Coventry pressed in the second half

6 Neil: Started off extremely brightly, but was gradually pushed back and almost conceded a goal as he lost the ball on the edge of his own box

8 CLARKE: The pick of Sunderland’s players all afternoon – took his goal well and was a constant threat down the left-hand side

6 Pritchard: Linked play effectively in his attacking-midfield role and helped take some of the sting out of the game in the second half

7 Stewart: Caused the Coventry defence problems all game and almost scored with a second-half effort that was tipped over

Subs:

5 O’Nien (for Embleton, 61): Was introduced in an attempt to wrest back control of the central area, but didn’t really change the flow of the game

Roberts (for Pritchard, 78)

(not used): Bass (gk), Hume, Alese, Wright, Simms.

COVENTRY (3-4-1-2):

Moore 6; Eccles 6, McFadzean 5 (Tavares 73), Panzo 7; Eccles 5 (Dabo 73), Sheaf 6, Hamer 7, Bidwell 6; Allen 5 (Palmer 62, 6); Godden 4 (Walker 73), GYOKERES 8.

Subs (not used): Wilson (gk), Doyle, Rose.

Man Of The Match: JACK CLARKE – He got the ball rolling with Sunderland’s early goal and was his side’s key creator down their left-hand side.
