TOMMY Smith has signed a one-year contract with Middlesbrough after spending pre-season on trial with the club.

The 30-year-old defender featured in all five of Boro’s pre-season games and spent the week in Portugal with the club on their warm weather training camp.

The addition of Smith to the squad adds options for Chris Wilder in defence with the former Huddersfield Town and Stoke City man likely to play back-up to Isaiah Jones.

Boro faced reported competition from Derby County for his signature this summer but Smith has committed his future on Teesside and is expected to be involved in the matchday squad for their opening game against West Brom.

He will wear the number 14 shirt for the forthcoming season and becomes their fifth signing of the summer following Darragh Lenihan, Liam Roberts, Ryan Giles and Zack Steffen through the door.

Meanwhile, Brentford striker Marcus Forss is expected to complete a permanent move to Boro today after completing a medical yesterday.
