CHRIS WILDER will discuss Tommy Smith’s future over the weekend – but admits Middlesbrough are not the only club holding talks with the defender.

Smith, who is a free agent following his release from Stoke City, has spent most of the last month training with Boro.

He was part of the Boro squad that travelled to Portugal for a training camp, and was a second-half substitute as the Teessiders rounded off their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win over Marseille on Friday night.

He is yet to sign a contract with Boro though, and while Wilder would like to add the 30-year-old to his squad and is confident Smith would like to spend next season at the Riverside, he accepts that the deal will have to suit all parties for it to be agreed, with other clubs beginning to hover in the background.

The Boro boss said: “We’re having a chat. I’ll have a chat with Tommy over the next 24 or 48 hours and see where that is.

“He’s got a couple of clubs that are interested in him. He’d like to come here, but it’s got to be right for Tommy as much as it’s got to be right for us. We’ll see where that goes.”
