THOUSANDS of racecar lovers jostled for a trackside view to watch the best of British Motorsport at Croft Circuit yesterday as a Yorkshire driver completed a happy homecoming.

The British Touring Car Championship were the headline act of elite drivers who wowed the crowds in North Yorkshire as Croft successfully played host on a racing day when the weather held out.

A host of different forms of racing flew around the track but the British Touring Car Championship took centre stage.

Three races from the BTCC took place on Sunday with a double victory for Yorkshire driver Dan Lloyd whilst Gordon Sheddon won the final round of racing in the evening.

Lloyd just fought off competition from pole sitter Colin Turkington to win the first race whilst pipping team mate Tom Ingram in the second to round off an emotional result. Lloyd had previously been involved in a crash two weeks ago at Oulton where he was taken to a nearby medical centre.

He said: “I’m an emotional wreck, I really am. The last two weeks have been hell and yesterday was good enough to come back and put it third on the grid. I’ve only had one win in the BTCC and that was here four years ago, to come back and do it after the team has completely rebuilt the car is just unbelievable.

“I’m lost for words, I just want to say a thank you to everyone for all the support. The last two weeks, not just physically, I’ve been through a lot, but the support kept me going. I came into this weekend thinking I’m going to give it my all, and that first lap was a representation of that.”

Sheddon’s victory in the final race saw him beat Josh Cook by a couple of seconds as thousands of spectators took in scenery and enjoyed the best of British Motorsport.
