NEWCASTLE are currently the bookmakers favourite to land England international Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The Magpies are currently working through their list of targets for the summer with a striker high on their priority list as the Premier League approved Dan Ashworth’s appointment as the club’s sporting director.
The club remain hopeful of brokering a deal for the Everton striker who scored five goals in 18 appearances last season during an injury hit campaign. However, the 25-year-old still has three years left on his current deal at Goodison Park.
According to Sky Bet, Newcastle are leading the chase for Calvert-Lewin ahead of a host of Premier League clubs including Arsenal, West Ham United and Manchester United.
Calvert-Lewin signed for the Toffees in the summer of 2016 as a trainee from Sheffield United. His breakthrough season on Merseyside came in the 2020/21 campaign where he scored 25 goals in 50 appearances. His prowess in front of goal earned him a place in England’s squad for the Euro 2020 tournament.
Reports suggest Everton aren’t interested in selling Calvert-Lewin to a direct rival but Newcastle are hopeful that the Toffees wouldn’t stand in the striker’s way should he want to move to St James’ Park.
The Magpies would have to pay a hefty price to lure him away from Goodison Park. However, the club continue to be quoted inflated prices for transfer targets following the Saudi PIF takeover last October.
