JOE WILLOCK and Jonjo Shelvey will not play again this season after picking up injuries that ruled them out of Newcastle United’s 5-0 hammering at Manchester City.

The Magpies duo were not involved in the squad as their team-mates were beaten at the Etihad Stadium, with head coach Eddie Howe confirming after the game that their absences were injury related.

Willock has suffered a recurrence of a long-standing knee issue, while Shelvey is nursing a calf problem that was also troubling him at the start of the campaign.

Neither will feature in Newcastle’s remaining two games, which will see them host Arsenal a week tomorrow before heading to Burnley on the final day of the campaign.

Howe said: “Joe’s had a knee problem for a couple of months. We felt it had gone, but it came back against Liverpool last week, so it looks like his season is over.

“Jonjo has picked up a calf injury, which is quite similar, I think, to the one he had at the start of this season. It looks like both players are out for the season.”
