DARLINGTON went out of the FA Trophy on penalties as they lost to Southport at Haig Avenue last night.

After hitting back from a goal down to draw level through Luke Charman, Quakers didn’t make their chances count. And Southport took advantage to win the shoot-out 5-4.

Darlington nearly took the lead in the opening minute when Charman put Jarrett Rivers clear in the box, but Southport keeper Tony McMillan saved at his feet.

Southport went straight up the other end and scored. Niall Watson broke up the left-hand side and crossed perfectly into the middle for Jordan Archer to bullet a header into the top left-hand corner.

Quakers had chances to equalise, but they were wasted by Alex Purver who fired over the top from a Kallum Griffiths pass, and Charman who put a shot on the turn wide.

Southport nearly went 2-0 up on 53 minutes when Archer tried his luck from the corner of the box and the ball took a deflection and looped over Tommy Taylor before hitting the top of the crossbar. And in Southport’s next attack, Connor Woods hit a 25-yarder that also hit the bar.

But Quakers levelled with a great solo goal by Charman, who collected a pass from Griffiths, ran at the Southport defence and struck a low shot into the bottom corner for his ninth goal of the season.

Lambert then nearly made it 2-1, but he slid the ball wide from a pull back by Kevin Dos Santos.

Charman was unlucky wit ha right-foot shot that went over, and McMillan saved an effort from Will Hatfield.

Southport nearly won it in the last minute when Munro’s shot was parried by Taylor, and then rebounded off Newell wide.

Then in stoppage time, Mondal found Dos Santos and he stepped inside and curled a right-foot shot inches wide.
