NEIL Warnock has bemoaned his lack of support behind the scenes at Middlesbrough following his departure from the club.

Warnock addressed the media following their 1-1 draw with West Brom to confirm his departure. The club say that the decision was made via mutual consent.

The 72-year-old took over in June 2020 and kept the club in the Championship. A 10th placed finish followed in the next season.

Emerging reports suggest that Chris Wilder is set to be appointed as the club’s new manager with an announcement expected next Tuesday.

There had been frictions between the manager and the club when it came to recruitment policy with Warnock alluding to a difference in outlooks across a number of press conferences across the season.

However, Warnock told the media after the 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns that he wasn't given the chance to sign the players he wanted.

Speaking on his time at the club, Warnock said: "I haven’t had much support from the club, with the exception of Steve.

“We were stuck with kids on the bench when I think with two or three more we could have been pushing for promotion.

“You just look at them today and you can’t say there’s anything wrong with the players today. They’ll get someone in now and give him the players I should have had six months ago.

“I understand they want to look beyond this season, but I think if I’d have had the full support in the summer we could have done it this season.

“I am disappointed, but it’s life. I won’t fall out with Steve. He’s been brilliant. I just wish he’d have been more hands on than leaving it to other people.”

Warnock said his conversation with Chairman Steve Gibson involved the conflict between him and the recruitment staff.

He admitted that the club didn't do enough to get the players he wanted.

Warnock added: “I am a bit frustrated. Even Steve said he felt he let me down a bit.

“We just missed out on a few lads I feel could have really got us up there in the top two or three. That’s with the signings I wanted.

“But unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the club are going down a different direction regarding recruitment and that’s fair enough.

“I thought we were very close to getting a few to start with, but it was like extracting teeth to get them overboard.

“It just never happened and one by one other clubs signed them as we hesitated too much and missed out.”
