8 BURGE: Made a couple of good saves in normal time and gave Sunderland the upper hand in the shoot-out when he saved from Austin

7 Winchester: Put in an excellent defensive display and came close with a couple of long-range shots that whistled wide

6 Alves: Was neat and composed in possession, but suffered an awkward moment when his sliced clearance whistled just over in the first half

8 Wright: Held things together with a dominant display at the heart of the back four – marked Dykes out of the game

5 Hume: Threw himself into some committed early challenges, but hurt himself while winning a tackle with Kakay and was forced off before the midway point of the first half

7 Neil: Showed his maturity and composure as he took the challenge of taking on Championship opposition in his stride

7 Evans: Made a pleasing return to the starting side for the opening hour or so – controlled things from the base of midfield

7 O’Nien: Threw himself into a series of challenges to ensure Sunderland had the upper hand in the midfield fight

6 Gooch: Got himself into some good positions through his energy and commitment, but wasn’t really able to come up with an end product

6 Stewart: Wasn’t a night when the Scotsman had a lot of clear-cut chances, but he held his nerve brilliantly to score from the spot

6 Dajaku: Displayed plenty of energy down Sunderland’s left-hand side but wasn’t really able to threaten the QPR goal


Subs:

7 Cirkin (for Hume, 24): Came on and put in a fine defensive display down the left-hand side

6 O’Brien (for Gooch, 64): Narrowly failed to connect with a low cross that flashed across the box

7 McGeady (for Evans, 64): Almost scored with a shot in the final minute and never looked like missing from the spot

6 Pritchard (for Dajaku, 69): Made no mistake with his penalty in the shootout and had a positive impact

6 Doyle (for Alves, 69): Slotted in seamlessly in the final few minutes

Man Of The Match: LEE BURGE – Sunderland’s goalkeeper made a couple of excellent saves in normal time and produced a crucial stop in the shoot-out.
