CALLUM Wilson has given a positive outlook on Newcastle United’s draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend and admits it’s something for them to build upon.

The 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park was Graeme Jones’ first game in interim charge of the Magpies where Wilson scored a wonderful overhead kick to level the game.

Newcastle thought the point had slipped away from them when Christian Benteke headed home minutes from time but VAR ruled out the goal for a foul.

Despite the fact that Newcastle managed to battle to a draw, it means they remain winless with nine games gone in the Premier League campaign. But the striker says there’s positives to take.

Wilson said: “We set up more solid. We’ve been conceding a lot of goals so we had to try and stop that. We were unfortunate to concede one today and not get the clean sheet but we managed to get back into the game and it’s something to build on going into next week.

“When you’re away from home, you need to make sure you’re not conceding goals or it’s going to be a difficult afternoon otherwise.

“We went behind, got the game to 1-1. I think another five minutes and we might have got something else out of the game. We got fortunate with one of their decisions but it was a foul at the end of the day. Thankfully VAR was there to intercept.

“It’s important we got a positive result for those guys (the supporters) who travelled all the way down and we’re thankful for their support. It’s something to build on. We’ve got a home game next week as well so there’ll be a lot more of them and we’ll try and get a positive result.”

Wilson has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers so far and is currently their top scorer with four goals in five games this season.

On the search for a new manager, new emerged overnight that the club are interested in a double Dutch swoop for Marc Overmars and Erik Ten Hag.

The former Arsenal winger Overmars is one of the leading candidates for the Sporting Director role at the club while Ten Hag would take the hotseat as manager. Both are currently in their respective roles at Ajax.

Paulo Foncesa, Frank Lampard, Lucien Farve and Eddie Howe all remain in the running to take over at St James Park.
