DAVID Wheater has held talks with Darlington over a potential move.

The 34-year-old defender has moved back to the region following his release from Oldham Athletic in the summer and is still a free agent.

While Darlington have made nine signings in the summer, there has been a lot of pushback from the fans with a big concern being their squad depth.

The Quakers were recently on the receiving end of a hammering in pre-season to Harrogate Town where they lost by five goals to one.

Wheater would provide a huge wealth of Football League experience with 376 appearances to his name.

The former Boro defender came through the academy and held down a place in the starting eleven whilst they were in the Premier League.

After Boro were relegated, he eventually earned a move to Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.

Wheater spent over eight years with Bolton before move to Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2019.

After a great first season with the League Two side, the centre-half was frozen out of the side over contractual issues. He was told in September that he was no longer a part of the side's plans due to a dispute over pay and his deal was mutually terminated in March.
