BAILEY Wright is not expected to leave Sunderland this summer according to manger Lee Johnson.

Wright, 28, has recently been linked with a move to Wigan Athletic and was absent from Sunderland's pre-season draw with York City last night fueling more speculation that he was on his way to the Latics.

However, Johnson told the media after the game that the Australian was out of the squad because of a groin injury.

Sunderland are desperate to increase the depth in their squad ahead of the League One season and selling Wright would be a big blow for the Black Cats

"He’s got a year left on his contract and I’ve been very honest and open with Bails all the way through" Johnson said after the 1-1 draw with York City.

"I don’t think new ownership has seen the best of Bailey Wright in terms of he’s got to do better than he did in the last ten games of the season but at the same he can and also he was a real warrior in that time because he had nine or ten weeks out and then come back and had nine games on the spin.

"We know what Bailey Wright brings off the pitch more than anyone, certainly I do because he’s just a fantastic human being but he’s also a great leader culturally for us.

"Performances have been steady and decent but I know there’s more in the tank.

"Any of those scenarios have to be on our terms. It’s all good and well any player saying they want to go or they want a better move but it’s got to be the right move for Sunderland and the team.”

Sunderland's next pre-season friendly is away to Harrogate Town on Saturday.
