We're a matter of hours away from England's biggest game in 55 years.

Gareth Southgate, former Middlesbrough captain, will lead the Three Lions to Wembley this evening for the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The region, and indeed the nation, will be watching and some of our sports stars have been sending their well wishes in the build up to a historic moment in English football...

Stewart Downing, former Boro winger and team mate of Gareth Southgate The Northern Echo:

"I just think with the crowd, I hope the occasion doesn’t get overawed. I just hope they keep doing what they’re doing because everyone is with them.

"I can see us being too fast and powerful for them. I hope I’m right.

"If you got a well done off him (Gareth Southgate), it mean more than it did coming from your manger because you knew you’d played well. That’s what I liked about him."

"You see the whole country how it unites everyone - all my friends and family, everyone I know.

"I was very very nervous, then obviously absolutely buzzing. What a feeling, the first final in 55 years, it’s amazing.

"It’s coming home - that seems to be all anyone is talking about and it’s brilliant."

Neil Maddison, former Boro midfielder and BBC Radio Tees Sport expert summariser:

The Northern Echo:

“So far it’s been a real joy to watch. I think they’ve been professional and they’ve got better as the tournament has gone on.

“The game the other night was just incredible and we find ourselves in a final now.

“All I would say is go and grasp that moment. Go and enjoy it. Go and get the result that this country desperately needs and do us all proud."

Jeff Stelling, Sky Sports presenter and Hartlepool club president:
