Darlington have captured the signing of former Football League left-back George Smith.

The 24-year-old started his career with Barnsley where he made 37 league appearances before switching to Gateshead.

Smith has since gone on to play for Northampton Town, Chesterfield, Dover Athletic and Harroagte Town.

Smith told the club's YouTube channel: "I just wanted to get back out there and play football again.

"Obviously I know it's a good club. I've played against Darlington a lot of times and I've always had good games against them.

"The manager has obviously seen me play quite a few times. Played against him when he was at Blyth and here as well so it's just the attraction of literally coming here and getting the enjoyment back out of football again after last season.

"It weren't really enjoyable last year. I just want to get that enjoyment back again.

"It's obviously been a transition from full-time to part-time but I'm sure I'll enjoy it and all I want to do is play as many games as I can for Darlington and win as many games as I possibly can.

"I know quite a few of the boys anyway (through) play against them so it's been an easy transition in terms of coming into a changing room that's easy to make friends and fit into the group straight away."

He becomes the seventh signing of the summer for Alun Armstrong's side following Tommy Taylor, Lucas Martin, Kallum Griffiths, Joey Hope, Leexus Beeden and Junior Mondal through the door at Blackwell Meadows.
