After a tense and pulsating play-off final between Hartlepool United and Torquay United, Pools came out on top through a penalty shootout and sealed their place in the Football League.

Here's a look back on today and how both teams fared against each other.

Goals:

1-0: Armstrong latched onto Oates shot in the box, turned his defender and lashed the ball off the underside of the bar and in.

1-1: In unbelievable circumstances, the goalkeeper Lucas Covolan wondered forward and glanced a header from a cross into the net.

Bookings: Ryan Johnson (7) for a sliding challenge on Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, Rhys Oates and Joe Lewis (55) booked for squaring up to each other, Luke Armstrong (79) was booked for a late sliding challenge on Asa Hall.

Referee: Simon Mather - One or two questionable decisions but overall handled the game well and allowed it to flow.

Entertainment: *****

HARTLEPOOL (3-5-2):

8 - Brad James - Was prerhaps at fault for Torquay's equaliser coming out to punch but he atoned for his errors in the shootout saving the crucial penalty.

8 - Timi Odusina - Another mammoth performance and they've come at the right time. Barely put a foot wrong and marshalled the right hand side.

8 - Gary Liddle - Where would Pools be without this man at the back? Some vital interceptions and blocks to deny Torquay.

6 - Ryan Johnson - Not at his best but was part of a resolute defence that held out until stoppage time during the game.

6 - David Ferguson - He didn't last the full 90 as he tired. It was a tough afternoon but he marshalled the left hand side well.

6 - Jamie Sterry - A quiet day by Sterry's standards but another one who put in a big shift.

7 - Mark Shelton - A big performance. Ran himself into the ground for 120 minutes and scored the first penalty of the shoot-out.

7 - Nicky Featherstone - He's does what he does so well. Kept things ticking over in the middle and didn't rush the pass. So cool.

6 - Gavan Holohan - He had a few efforts on goal and battled away in the middle of the park. He didn't last the 90 and it was probably the right decision to bring him off.

9 - Luke Armstrong - A huge shigt from Armstrong. He scored the crucial goal in the first half and ran himself into the ground for 120 minutes. He won't be too disappointed with his miss in the shootout.

6 - Rhys Oates - It was a quiet day by his standards but he played a big part in the goal. It was his shot which fell Armstrong's way.

Subs:

7 - Ryan Donaldson - He provided fresh legs at a crucial time in the game. He gave Torquay something to think about and he dispatched his penalty well.

7 - Zaine Francis Angol - He was very impressive. H looked a big threat down the left going forward and kept things tidy at the back.

6 - Danny Elliott - He could have put more of a shift in but he did cause problems. Perhaps should have scored at the death. He did score his penalty though.

6 - Luke Molyneux -He made one contribution after coming on in the 120th minute and that's scoring in te oenalty shootout. That will do for me.

TORQUAY UNITED: Lucas Covolan (9); Ben Wynter (7), Kyle Cameron (8), Connor Lemonheigh-Evans (7), Asa Hall (7), Danny Wright (7), Armani Little (6), Adam Randell (6), Sam Sherring (6), Dean Moxey (5), Joe Lewis (5).
