SUNDERLAND goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light.

Patterson, who has signed a two-year deal with the option of a further year, rose through the ranks on Wearside and made his competitive debut in a Papa John’s Trophy clash with Fleetwood Town back in November.

The 21-year-old would also go on to face Oldham in the same competition for the Black Cats as well as playing 24 Premier League 2 games last season.

Patterson will add depth to the goalkeeping department at Sunderland with Lee Burge currently being the only first-team contracted keeper at the club.

Patterson told the club website: "I’m delighted to extend my contract with the club I’ve been at for many years now.

"I was pleased with the way last season went on a personal level and I can’t wait to get started again and see what the new season brings.

"Over the past year, I feel I’ve progressed well and it’s now important to build on that."

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman said "Anthony has been progressing well.

"We took the option on his contract last year with the intention of seeking to agree new terms and we are really happy to have this in place for the start of the season.

"He returns later this month as a member of the first-team squad and he has a great opportunity to progress with us.

Sunderland are still awaiting news on the future of of four first-team players. Luke O'Nien, Aiden McGeady, Denver Hume and Charlie Wyke have all been offered fresh terms at the club with their contracts coming to an end this summer.

Wyke looks set to reject an offer at the Stadium of Light as Scottish Premier League side Celtic are ready to persuade him to make a move north of the border.
