FABIAN SCHAR has taken to social media to confirm that he will be sidelined 'for a number of months' with the knee injury he sustained in Newcastle's 3-2 win over Southampton yesterday.
Schar was stretchered off in the closing stages at St James' Park after damaging his knee.
The centre-half was involved in a collision as he challenged for the rebound after his initial effort from a free-kick hit the Southampton wall.
An initial assessment of the injury has taken place, with Schar confirming on social media he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines - and hinting he could face a race against time to be fit for Switzerland's campaign at this summer's European Championships.
Schar wrote: "Difficult to accept. I felt really good on the pitch and the team did well the last few games.
"Now I will be out for a few months and its gonna be a hard time. But I will try everything to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. And my goal will be to be ready for the Euros."
